Expansive Forest Preserve with miles of diverse trails that made for an outstanding hike. The trails range from wide paved, to gravel, to narrow natural trails. The trails were well-maintained and in great shape, but there wasn't a lot of signage. The AllTrails app was also incorrect on trail locations, however, the trails were still relatively easy to navigate.
So we love this place as it offers many different options as far as where you like to hike. If you prefer prairie, then you can hike prairie. If you want wooded, then yep, got that too. We have camped at the adjoining Paul Wolff campground. I love the variety when it comes to hiking. Last time we came across chicken of the woods fungus. Completely edible and great to work with but alas, no one can forage in Illinois forest preserves (btw Wisconsin rules for foraging are complete opposite 😉). Anyway, great place to walk, hike and even bike.
We live less than a mile from here, and have been walking/biking these trails in all seasons of the year, for over 20 years. It is still one of our favorite local places to hike, and we appreciate that the county continues to make improvements/enhancements to everyone's experience here, whether you are picnicking, fishing, hiking, walking your dog, biking the trail, riding your horses, birdwatching, or camping in your tent or RV. Here's a couple pics from our most recent visit on 4.27.24. It's a wonderful and quiet escape from the daily hustle.
Every other year We come up and visit Wife's family. Reservations only taken now!
Great forrest preserve to get away and feel like your miles from home and yet it is almost in your back yard. Great hiking paths and loops. Can easily spend hours or just a few minutes here. Family friendly!
