Camped there the first part of November 2025 and it was great. The dog park is absolutely awesome and there were locals there with their dogs. We were in a 32 foot RV trailer and had a delightful time on the trails and all around the park. Had to buy another water hose because a squirrel bit ours and the store is generously stocked with camping gear. All camp sites were great including the tents and cabins. Yes, there will be bugs, you are near the coast and there is plenty of water around because you are on an island.

I did not have a problem the campsite is clean and well maintained but I have some observations. The staff is unfriendly, like what I would imagine an HOA board meeting to be like. How I used the campground: I planned a quick overnight trip with my two daughters in Charleston for a ghost tour (Oct 2nd). I thought camping for the night would be more fun than a hotel plus we could tell ghost stories with a fire and s’mores after the tour. When trying to book the closest campground to our tour (James Island) I learned that the tent camping area does not have car access, therefore needed to book an rv site (no sewer) due to our tight schedule . I came in late in day, 6pm. We set up as quickly as we could then scurried off for our walking ghost tour 8pm (highly recommend). We got back at the campsite about 10:30, lit a fire and enjoyed our s’more’s. We slept in late 9am, ate breakfast, but checkout was 11am. We began the teardown process but realized we could use an extra hour. We called the office to see if we could get a little more time and were informed that all campers need to check out at 11, period (maybe where HOA came to mind). Look, did the campground do anything wrong, heck no, it’s the rules. Could have the campground have taken in to account that since we were tent camping I did not use any water or electricity? Nor had time for use of any of their facilities including showers and given us an extra hour? (I paid $75 for the campsite). Well you can decide that answer. For me If I go back to Charleston, I will opt for a hotel.

We were in our camper but cottages are available to rent. Nice people working for the county! Place is kept up impeccably! There are many biking and walking trails, climbing walls, seasonal water park area and much more. They are setting up for Xmas lights and sales of all things Christmas. Would love to be able to be here to see it. Charleston County goes above and beyond! Great place!

We spent 5 nights camping at James Island county park and were very impressed with the staff, knowledgeable and friendly. The campground was excellent, full hookup and large enough so we didn't feel crowded like other campgrounds. There is a lot to do with the games, trails, fishing and water park. We will definitely be staying there again, we have our daughter's family to visit and we come down fairly often.
