It's a nice spot if you are a Pine Island local, but not worth a drive here from afar. A few miles of unpaved trails that often loop back to the road. Some nice wildlife.

Fun little preserve. Has some areas with nice boardwalks and then some mowed down areas. Saw some little crabs but not much wildlife the day we were there. We went midday.

We walked the Phil Buchanen Memorial Trail late am on 3-4-26. Sign on information board stating the boardwalk to the trail is closed due to hurricane damage is out-of-date. Nice new boardwalk. Saw lots of crab holes but no crabs. Saw 1 Little Blue Heron and Western Cattle Egrets in parking lot area. No bugs while we were there. While driving down the main road afterwards we saw and stopped to watch a Bald Eagle eating a fish. We went to Pine Island primarily to eat lunch at Tarpon Lodge. Nice walk to do if you go to Pine Island to eat or check out the numerous little shops, but not if you want to see wildlife.

It's the rainy season so there was some flooding and I didn't have boots on so didn't hike much but will definitely come back. Saw a bald eagle right when I got here so that's promising for wildlife sitings!

BRING BUG SPRAY. Seriously. I used bug spray and the mosquitos found any spot which I missed. Ruined the walk. Hard to stop and enjoy the place with bugs in your face and ears. The Phil Buchanan Memorial Trail was closed. We did the small loop and some of the purple loop before giving up because of the mosquitos. We saw two bald eagles hanging out on the power lines. Their nest is gone but they are still hanging around. Trails were a little muddy.
