It's a gravel path with peeks in elevation here and there. Port a potty along the way in case you forget to go at home. This is also a bike path so be vigilant. Definitely a good workout.

The miles of trails at this Forest Preserve are great for hiking, running, or biking. I hiked 7 miles of trails, and there's still other trails to explore. The preserve features a mix of wooded areas with beautiful oaks, and prairies, and meadows. The DuPage County Forest Preserve District does a phenomenal job of maintaining their forest preserves, trails, and facilities and Greene Valley is no different. The trails are wide, crushed limestone, in great shape. Trail markers and signage are present through the Preserve. There's multiple parking lots and bathrooms available.

Forest Preserve with wide gravel well-kept trails. Signposts throughout. Horses on trails along with fresh horse manure. Deer seen on paths quickly bound away. Wooded and open areas. Large parking lot. Port a potty available.

Located primarily in Naperville and Woodridge, the Greene Valley Forest Preserve is a massive 1,388-acre site that ranks as one of the most botanically diverse areas in DuPage County. It is a favorite for locals seeking a mix of serious exercise, scenic vistas, and quiet nature observation. The Highlight: The Scenic Overlook The most famous feature of the preserve is the 190-foot-tall scenic overlook, built atop a repurposed landfill. * The View: On clear days, you can see the Chicago skyline to the east and a panoramic view of the suburban canopy. * Availability: Access is limited. The hill is typically open to vehicles and hikers only on weekends from May through October (11 a.m. – 6 p.m.). * Birding: It is a premier spot for hawk-watching during the fall migration. Trail System & Activities Greene Valley features over 12 miles of wide, crushed-limestone trails that are excellent for hiking, running, and cycling. * Diverse Terrain: You’ll pass through ancient oak woodlands (some over 200 years old), vibrant prairies, and wetlands. * The Hawk Trail: A 2.6-mile loop at the base of the hill that provides a great workout with slight elevation changes. * Amenities: The preserve includes a popular off-leash dog park (permit required), a model aircraft field, and several picnic shelters. History & Flora The land has deep roots in local agriculture. You can still see the Greene Barn (built in 1870) and the Oak Cottage (1850) at the north end of the preserve. * Botany: With over 540 native plant species, the spring wildflower displays (especially trillium and Virginia bluebells) are spectacular. * Wildlife: It’s common to spot deer, coyotes, great horned owls, and various migratory waterfowl near the East Branch DuPage River. The Verdict | Pros | Cons | |---|---| | Top-tier Maintenance: Trails are wide, well-marked, and rarely overgrown. | Limited Shade: Many prairie segments are fully exposed; it gets very hot in mid-summer. | | Unique Elevation: The hill offers the highest public vantage point in the county. | Restricted Access: The best view is only accessible two days a week for half the year. | | Versatility: Great for families, serious bikers, and birders alike. | Muddy Lowlands: Some mowed-turf sections can stay soggy for days after rain. | Summary Review Greene Valley is a "choose your own adventure" preserve. If you want a rigorous bike ride or a long-distance run, the interconnected limestone loops are perfect. If you want a peaceful afternoon, the oak groves north of 75th Street offer quiet serenity. Don't miss the Hill in the autumn; the combination of the fall colors and the crisp view of Chicago is arguably the best vista in the western suburbs. Would you like me to find a trail map for you or look up the specific permit requirements for the dog park?

It was an okay forest preserve. We had fun and there were plenty of trails for biking and hiking but when I think of a forest preserve I think of a massive amount of dense trees. Most of our hiking was on a rock path in sunlight (yes, I enjoyed myself) it's a Nice area to enjoy the day but not the very wooded area I was hoping. If I'm going to a forest I want to be immersed in trees. There was a historic barn and house which wasn't tour able but a photo op. There were other trails we did not embark but from the road view it seemed the other trails were also not in the woods. Finally, there is a dog park, and rumor has it you need a permit to have your dog “off leash” at the park.
