I am sad to see this is our only dog park in our part of Rio Rancho. Granted we moved here from Colorado and it is very hard to come close to any there. That state is clearly a “dog-friendly” state. Let’s start with the basics. It is a good size, and the gates are great for safety. But after that… c’mon! The poor park is completely lacking in shade! Sure there is a bit for the humans, but it is not a place to take a dog on just about any summer day. This place really needs some trees, and a very large or several smaller pavilion-shade structures. Add some DOG playground equipment in there, and a drinking fountain/trough. And please put several (to many) inches of soft, natural mulch if one can’t have a natural grassy ground. What about native grasses? We have buffalo grass as lawn. It requires very little water ever, it never need mowed, it creates a cooler environment, it holds up to traffic. And more benches under shaded areas makes a more friendly “neighborly” place to linger and meet. That translates to more use of the park.

There was a bit of shade under the canopy and a nice bench to sit at. I really loved the water fountain with the attached dog bowl! It was awesome! Such a smart and simple idea! My dogs enjoyed a cool drink and a romp around the dog run. They really wanted to roll in the grass though.
