Great center for adoption, very detailed and responsible for the animals and they did a great job helping us adopt our puppy to a forever home. Very organized facility with very amazing staff!

I can see why the ratings are slightly lower than surrounding adoption agencies. Heed other reviews, they will deny applications off the slightest things. You need a squeaky clean application and hope that they're in the mood to allow an adoption.
After I was denied, I was told to come back after I built more vet history. I have vet history, and that would mean adopting outside of their establishment which, from their standards, is supposed to be a great place to adopt from. I only wanted to adopt a single cat, a long life investment. I'm not coming back in two years.
The cat I was interested in meeting reminded me of a cat I held close when I was younger... Needless to say it hurt when I was denied. I'll be looking elsewhere for my adoption. This strict denial system only promotes shadier and rougher adoption options to be considered.
Again, consider other reviews before you end up wasting time jumping through the hoops just to be told no over the slightest thing they deem off.

We had the most wonderful experience adopting from this shelter! From the moment we walked in, it was clear how deeply they care for every single animal—truly loving them as if they were their own. The staff took the time to get to know our family and thoughtfully matched us with the perfect cat.
They made the entire adoption process easy, compassionate, and focused on what was truly best for the animal. I was so impressed by how well they knew each pet’s personality and behaviors, and how committed they were to ensuring a great fit on both sides.
Our new kitty already feels like part of the family, and we are so grateful for the kindness, patience, and love this team pours into their work. Highly recommend this shelter to anyone looking to adopt!

We adopted the sweetest little dog here! They really care about making sure the dog and home are the right fit, so they do a thorough screening of potential adopters. We applaud the work they put into taking care of the animals and doing everything they can to be sure the pet goes to a permanent and happy home for the rest of its life. We were given lots of information about our new dogs health history and personality, training tips and useful advice on helping her get settled. Definitely recommend this Humane Society for adopting the right pet for your household.

I am so disappointed with the Humane Society of South Central Michigan. My dad had every intention to adopt a cat today. The application was processed, we had an appointment, the shelter even picked out a specific cat they thought would work for his “situation” as they said. Mind you, he has no situation- just a dude living with two dogs who are cat-friendly, which they knew about from the incredibly extensive application. I showed up with him, my mom, and brother and were immediately greeted with weird vibes. Their staff, Lacy, said a notice would’ve been nice that more than just him show up which I can understand, but why even say that when we were already there? My mom even offered for the rest of us to wait outside and they still said we could go see the cats. We were the only non-staff personnel there as far as I could tell. They also previously told him during their multiple phone calls (I even talked to them too) that he’d be able to take a pet home today. She even asked him to go back to the car to get the cat carrier we brought.
Not even five minutes into meeting with the cats Lacy comes in to tell him that something came up so he now won’t be able to adopt today and asked him to come back in next week during the 16 hours a week they’re actually open which wasn’t possible because he’s an adult with a regular job. He jumped through so many hoops just to get this appointment.
I can fully understand being protective of who your animals go to. My family fostered countless animals from that same organization (and more) for YEARS, granted that was years ago. But we are not new to this and have vetted our own fair share of potential adopters. I don’t expect the staff to know that background, but I would think we’d still be on record somewhere.
They were so weird and borderline rude. We left quickly after, all of us discouraged, and then they wanted to act like salespeople and insist on when he could come back next week ALONE for an interview so there wouldn’t be any “cross talk” as she said. Again, the three of us were fine with just waiting outside if it was that serious. We were just a normal family trying to take home a rescue kitty or two for my dad and all that just because four of us showed up? I truly don’t get it and am still so baffled and upset.
It’s just so sad these animals need a home and this place makes it so hard.
