I am currently homeless and I hate that the drug addicted homeless make a bad impression to those who generalize the homeless as if we are all one and the same. I empathasize with the hopelessness of their situation, but there's little excuse for trashing what should be a place for people to relax and feel safe. I love the bike paths and frequently leave my car while running errands on my electric ride. It keeps me from wasting the gas and space on the road, but I understand that it's not for everyone. I do wish the bike path infrastructure was invested in as much as the roads to encourage more people to ditch their cars when not needed. It's hard for me to justify driving my car when a backpack and a small ride is all that's needed.

Millrace Park has a large arbor that has 3 benches for you to sit on & a very healthy vining plant that covers it. There is a overlook platform that juts out by the mill- race that lets you observe the stream & plants & animals that live in the area. A pretty seated sunken, slightly private amenity is on the west end of the park, just before you go down the hill to the river (Willamette)! There is a nice big open grassy area & parking is on the otherside of the arbor. If you have an electric vehicle, you can change it here in the parking lot at the charging station.

I found it fascinating that this place actually existed! We kind of stumbled upon it after visiting the Springfield Depot. I am a lifelong resident of the area and had never known about it. Actually kind of a "diamond in the rough" as far as city parks go BUT it did not seem very well maintained; the statue was in ill repair with paint chipping and general wear and tear from the elements. I guess you could call it the "terrace area" was also not looking too good due to lack of maintenance. We also walked the path toward the river along the millrace and ended up in the backyard of a private vision business as there was no signage to speak of and the path just dead ended there! I love Springfield and I love the open spaces however this one needs some TLC and signage!
