The Presumpscot River Preserve is one of those hidden gems that makes you forget you’re only minutes from downtown Portland. The moment you step onto the trail, the noise of the city fades into the background and you’re surrounded by tall pines, mossy paths, and the calming rush of the river. The preserve offers a mix of easy to moderate trails that loop along the Presumpscot River, with a few spots that open up to beautiful views and even a small waterfall. It’s a great spot for a casual hike, a trail run, or just a walk with your dog (and yes, you’ll meet plenty of dogs along the way). The terrain varies — some sections are smooth and easy, while others get rooty or a bit steep, especially near the riverbanks. Good footwear definitely helps. In the spring and summer, the place feels lush and vibrant, while fall brings that perfect Maine foliage vibe that makes you want to sit on a rock and just stare at the colors. Parking can be a little tight on Overset Road, so it’s smart to come early or later in the day. The trails are well-marked, but bringing a map or using a hiking app isn’t a bad idea for first-timers. Overall, the Presumpscot River Preserve hits that sweet spot between accessibility and adventure. It’s close enough for a quick nature break but big enough to feel like an escape. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or just looking for a peaceful walk by the water, this preserve delivers every time.

Very pretty scenic walk. It is beautiful, and covers a decent enough distance for a couple hours, including the loops. The scenery is slightly negatively impacted due to a TON of trespassing signage on every second tree near the Well End.

Great trail right next to the Presumpscot River! Very dog friendly with lots of little areas to access the water if your pup likes to swim! Can get busy on weekends.

Presumpscot River Walk — Reviewed by Austin, Trail Inspector First Class 🌲 Overall Vibe Ah yes, the Presumpscot River Walk: a fine stretch of earth where a dog can truly contemplate life, liberty, and the pursuit of squirrels. This is a trail that says, “Welcome, traveler. Please enjoy my smells.” 🐕 Sniffability Index: 9.4/10 - Mossy logs? Check. - Riverbank mud with mysterious origins? Check. - A rotating cast of woodland creatures leaving cryptic messages in the underbrush? Double check. I had to stop every 6 feet to read the latest gossip. Riveting stuff. 💧 Water Features The river itself is a masterpiece. Cool, splashable, and perfect for sticking your face into for no reason. I attempted to wade in. My human said “Austin, no.” I pretended not to hear. Classic comedy. 🦆 Wildlife Saw ducks. Ducks saw me. We exchanged a tense diplomatic stare. No treaties were signed. 🚶‍♂️ Trail Conditions - Wide enough for me to strut confidently - Shaded in all the right places - Occasional roots and rocks to leap over dramatically - Zero benches designed for dogs, which feels like an oversight 🐾 Social Scene Met a golden retriever named Maple. She smelled like optimism and peanut butter. 10/10 would sniff again. 🍃 Enrichment Opportunities - Sticks: abundant - Mud: plentiful - Leaves: swirling temptations - Humans: slow but manageable ⭐ Final Verdict “A highly sniffable riverside promenade with excellent mud access, strong squirrel potential, and a river that calls to my soul. Would walk again, would drag my human again, would ignore recall commands again.”

Easy, well marked, and well maintained trails. Short, moderately steep initial section down to the river bank, then the trail splits to the falls on the right and along the placid river to the left. Falls section is relatively short while the river bank section is a longer hike.
