Sometimes a wrong turn can lead to an interesting discovery as was the case when I missed my exit and ended up in Golden Glades, so named because of the Golden Glades Interchange, a somewhat confusing confluence of six major roads. At first glance Biscayne Gardens seems like your typical, run of the mill neighborhood park. The passive space has open lawn, trees, paved walkways, and benches. It would be an adequate space for exercise, dog walking, or an impromptu soccer game. While exploring the park I saw something that made this park unique. Biscayne Gardens Park and the surrounding neighborhood has had a long history of problems with flooding. Often the park can't even be used because it is under water. In recent years the park has been the focus of a plan to turn the water which had been a problem into a solution. In the back of Biscayne Gardens Park next to the Golden Glades Trash and Recycling Center, an award winning bioswale has been created. A bioswale is a man made shallow ditch with plants that has been created to slow and filter rainwater runoff to prevent pollutants from infiltrating the ground water. This mini ecosystem provides an inviting habitat for wildlife and plants while cleaning the water. This bioswale is an example of how the park system can provide positive environmental impact in addition to recreation. The Parks Research and Ooen Space Development department oversees more than 270 parks throughout Miami Dade County with the mission of providing sustainability across the county. The bioswale in Biscayne Gardens park captures more than 37 thousand gallons of water protecting the surrounding height from flooding, It won a 2025 NACo, National Association of Counties) Achievement award recognizing the bioswale for its role in sustainable water management by capturing runoff on the park's west perimeter.

Great park just for walking or biking. Open space with no place to sit. This is just to ride something. Bring your own chairs. Nice refreshing air.
